LTE Asbestos Newsblog - Best Management Practices

Working groups organized by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), as part of the re-evaluation of Section 5.5 of the Solid Waste Regulations pertaining to asbestos containing soil (ACS), continue to work furiously to develop best management practices (BMPs) for managing asbestos in soil and to incorporate a risk-based component to the approach.  Due to the amount of work to be done, the schedule for final rulemaking has been extended to May 2012.

LTE is a member of the BMP Workgroup developing a matrix to incorporate prescribed controls for management of ACS during soil disturbing activities.  Other issues being discussed in the workgroup meetings are soil characterization, reuse, transportation, and disposal of ACS.

Workgroup and general stakeholder meetings will continue through March 2012, when it is anticipated rule revisions will be ready to submit to the Colorado Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission for final rulemaking.
